Nike announces the Black History collection leveraging the colors from the PAN African Flag in popular shoes like the Jordan I, Kyrie’s, Air Max’s, and more. The issue with this is that they are profiting off of a movement they are not a part of. Also, they are exerting their influence to control the narrative to one of “equality” instead of empowerment. If there is going to be apparel and footwear sold to signify the movement, it’s benefactor should be a Black Owned Business. Period. Black people should not allow companies to market to us for free (See Why It Doesn't Matter What The Parent's Think). This is why black people have to stop getting excited about the 1st Black to be accepted by some institution, or when Kellogg’s decides to make Black History Cheerios, because they are all symbolic gestures. Even when these companies donate a portion of the proceeds to charity, it’s still not acceptable. The Black Community does not need charity. It needs investment, and until one of these major companies decide to do real business with Black Community. The Black Community should not support them. This “Culture Vulturing” at it’s finest. So instead support the list of Black Owned footwear brands companies we’ve provided below.
